Character Information
Name: Kaywinnit Lee “Kaylee” Frye
Age: 21 (based on actor’s age in the series)
Fandom: Firefly/Serenity
Point In Fandom Taken From: During the Serenity film,
Employee or Patient? Employee - Obviously she’s not actually qualified as a doctor/nurse, but I was having a chat to Amy about the roles Kaylee could fill and I think it’d really work out!

Personality: Kaylee's considered a bit of an individual out in the 'Black, though it's not through any truly conscious efforts, Kaylee is simply cheerful by nature. Genuinely, infectiously cheerful. Playing the eternal optimist Kaylee is often able to find the sunny side of a situation: she gives people the benefit of the doubt, she means to see some form of good in just about everyone and her willingness to trust folk goes hand in hand with that. For these things she is truly the heart of her family, be it blood related, or crew; innately warm and loving. Unfortunately, she does get proven wrong now and again, though nothing's quite soured her views for good. Life for Kaylee whether they're just scraping by, or a job's paid up well is bliss. Her happiness is to be found fixing something and in the the people around her she holds dear, they're as good as family to her. She's so content with her life as it is, Kaylee is quick to defend it stubbornly against those who might see to criticise her lifestyle.

For a grease-monkey with a love for machinery she is dreadfully girly - anything flowery, sunny or frilly is right up her alley, being a mechanic since she could walk has not seen her lose one iota of glee for being a girl. Though she has grown up amongst modest, quiet townfolk, she's not in the least bit shy or meek as one might expect a child raised on traditional manners. Her overly friendly nature toward even those she hasn't met before have the effect of flirtatiousness, even if she doesn't always mean it to seem so. For all her warmth, Kaylee’s temperament does verge on the extremes when provoked - if she’s embarrassed or hurt, she’ll turn cold as ice on even those fondest to her. For the most part Kaylee would be considered a free spirit, there is scarcely a taboo subject in conversation and she'll rarely hide her opinion from another. One to find fun or set out to make her own, it's sometimes as an attempt to distract from something bleaker - she likes to paint and draw, though her artistry is generally in the form of but not strictly limited to flowery patters, embroidery and the arrangement of fairy-lights.

Being part of Serenity's crew has opened her eyes to plenty of things she would have rarely have thought on had she never left home. Her family being relatively Alliance neutral, or rather didn't so much care one way or the other; their worries rather more basic. Nowadays her views are a little more skewed though the influence of Mal, and what she has seen in the treatment of Serenity and her crew by the Alliance in their efforts to scrape a living. Crime? So long as it's a slight to the Alliance there's no reason to bat an eyelid and it’s not quite a wrong doing, is it? Despite her experience, it's more her trusting personality that can see her naive at times than actual lack of knowledge or intelligence.

Brief History: A humble couple on backwater moon orbiting the border world Paquin lived an simple, provincial life; it was hoped by the husband there'd be a son, with a keen interest and matching talent for the family business in fixing all manner for machinery, and by the wife a sweet girl, with a kind nature to brighten what was a at times a bleak existence out on the borderlands. Kaywinnit Lee Frye turned out a good measure of both her parents hopes. Though she was never forced by her father to take an interest in mechanics, it came second nature to her, and soon as she could reach it was machinery that took her fascination from the start. To pacify her interest he'd bring home the less dangerous bits and bobs for the girl to gaze at, and turn over in her hands to her heart's content. and in the years to follow let her come observe his work. Where one might expect her to become a young tomboy through and through for all her devotion to machinery and grease, she never lost her more feminine love for all things pretty, flowery and frilly, it was no fight to get her into a dress, however difficult it was to get the grease off her face.

Soon as she was old enough, she took to working with her daddy, at least as soon as he got sick of her nagging him, Kaylee going on to prove herself. Though she was quite happy, near content with her work on the home world, it was the boats she took to having a real curiosity for and though they got the rare job for a ship in port that desperately needed tinkering with, it was more often than not each ship to port had their on board mechanic to do the work. On her breaks she'd strike up conversation with those 'flying mechanics' taking leave. But not always conversation exclusively. In the ship mechanic business there was hardly a shortage of handsome young men who spent weeks in the 'Black who caught her eye and even better liked to talk shop. It was one such encounter with a buff, dim blonde known as 'Bester', based on a Firefly Class Freighter - all he need do was mention sneaking her on board to the boat's engine for a jaunt, and Kaylee followed - Fireflies had a bunch of nifty insides. Unfortunately their 'sneaking' wasn't so well executed as they were discovered by the ship's Captain. Far from embarrassed, Kaylee cheerfully greeted him for the first time semi-dressed as though he'd merely stumbled in on nothing more than an idle chat. Not only that she fixed a small, seemingly trivial fault in the engine that had befuddled Bester and kept Serenity grounded; for that she was hired.

List of Abilities/Powers: A knack for fixing machinery, Kaylee claims they ‘speak to her’ not an actual power, obviously, she’s just very skilled in that respect.

Wasn’t another place that fitted it’s name so well. Haven. They’d come here before, they knew the ‘townfolk’ who’d made their life on the little moon; refuge when things were hot and they needed a place to go underground for a spell. Kaylee sat perched by the campfire, listening to Jayne pluck out a few odd notes on the guitar - most folks were sleeping now. The fire was plenty warm, but still Kaylee pulled her sweater a little closer and drew her knees up to her chest. Place like Haven soothed you right through to the core, like a warm drink - but it didn’t take away worries entirely. For all she felt safe here, Kaylee couldn’t help but linger on the fears for what was going to happen to River, to Simon now? “How long you ‘spose we’re gonna stay with the’Shepherd? ‘Cause I like it just fine here- never was a place so peaceful.” She half mused, half asked of Jayne as he set down his guitar.
